The HSE Assistant is responsible for supporting the HSSEQ department.

Position Scope:

The HSE Assistant is responsible for supporting the Health, Safety, Security, Environment & Quality (HSSEQ) department in implementing and maintaining CARIRI’s HSE policies, procedures, and programs. The incumbent will assist in ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, STOW-TT certification requirements, and industry best practices, to foster a safe and healthy working environment.

 

 Key Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Assist in ensuring compliance with local HSE legislation, regulations (OSH Act, EMA Act etc), and CARIRI’s policies and procedures.
  • Monitor workplace activities to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, risk assessments, and audits to assess compliance and effectiveness of HSE measures.
  • Assist in maintaining STOW-TT certification requirements.
  • Assist in investigating workplace incidents, accidents, and near-misses, ensuring timely reporting and documentation.
  • Maintain records of safety incidents and generate reports for management review.
  • Follow up on corrective and preventive actions to mitigate future risks.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting HSE training sessions, toolbox talks, and safety drills for employees and contractors.
  • Support the development and dissemination of HSE awareness materials, including posters, newsletters, and safety bulletins.
  • Assist in implementing and updating emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Coordinate fire drills, first aid training, and other emergency preparedness exercises.
  • Ensure that first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency equipment are properly maintained and accessible.
  • Support initiatives to minimize environmental impact, including waste management and energy conservation.
  • Assist in monitoring and reporting environmental performance indicators.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date HSE records, reports, and documentation.
  • Assist in preparing reports for internal and external audits.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities inclusive of relevant Management Systems.

 

Education:

 

  • Diploma or Associate Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED, Fire Safety, or NEBOSH/OSHA certification would be an asset.

 

Experience:

 

  • At least 2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in an industrial, laboratory, or technical environment.
  • Experience with STOW-TT certification, ISO/IEC 17025:2017 & ISO 9001:2015 standards will be an asset.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities etc.:

 

  • Knowledge of HSE regulations and STOW-TT certification.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills to identify hazards and risks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct training and awareness sessions effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Flexibility.
  • Good customer service skills.
