Job Summary / Primary Role Objective:

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the General Manager role requires a dynamic and experienced professional to oversee the operations of the company. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in driving business growth through strategic sales initiatives, product development, and strong relationship management. Key responsibilities include managing brokerage operations, developing and implementing sales strategies, building relationships with clients and insurance providers, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The successful candidate will be a results-oriented leader with excellent communication and analytical skills.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1.   Business Development and Strategy Execution:

  • Present to the Board and committees on new product development, growth plans, regional expansion, and financial performance
  • Continually seek to improve performance levels by anticipating changes in Market practices, industry trends, changing client needs and new technology. 
  • Develop, implement and maintain a value-adding regime of key performance indicators which enables robust business decisions
  • Define, implement and maintain appropriate operating standards to maximize synergies

2.    Sales and Client Relationship Management:

  • Develop and execute vertically driven sales campaigns 
  • Drive the sales initiative ensuring growth through the delivery of new client relationships
  • Build and maintain relationships with insurance companies, vendors and corporate clients
  • Interact with Marketing on advertisements, email blasts, and social media presence
  • Sell/cross sell the organization’s products and services and identify referral opportunities

3.    Operations Management:

  • Manage the brokerage operations ensuring adequate resources and systems are adopted
  • Manage the operations of the business including the negotiation of contracts
  • Manage, review and analyze all reports (financial, analytical, operational)
  • Review and regularly update processes, policies, procedures and service level agreements with a view to improving employee excellence and customer satisfaction
  • Plan and manage the annual budget with concentration on team targets and operational efficiency

4.    Human Resources and Team Management

  • Recruit and select staff for the insurance business in collaboration with the Human Resource Department. 
  • Develop a culture of teamwork and ensure high performance
  • Coach direct reports to develop appropriate knowledge, skills, and attributes
  • Manage staff training, development, and job appraisals

5.    Compliance and Risk Management

  • Oversee the execution of the Compliance and Risk frameworks
  • Ensure the business meets its regulatory and legal obligations 
  • Manage, review and update the operation’s Business Continuity plan

 

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or management or equivalent.
  • Barbados Diploma in Insurance or US / UK equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 years of leadership experience in the insurance industry managing life, health and general insurance. 

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Exceptional teambuilding, leadership and communication skills expertly applied in building and nurturing high performing teams
  • Strong client focus with a drive to deliver consistent and outstanding customer experiences and to achieve high customer retention
  • Strong business development skills with keen interest in industry trends and market conditions enabling development and execution of business growth strategies
  • Good operations management skills with ability to integrate technology and optimise workflows
  • Strong risk management, analytical and problem solving abilities 
  • People sensitive, target focused, self-motivated and driven to succeed
