Family Nurse Practitioner

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Family Nurse Practitioner. The Family Nurse Practitioner’s scope of duty is supervised by the Public Health Nurse Manager Community Nursing Services for nursing duties and the District Medical Officer for duties of a medical nature. Diagnose in collaboration with the Medical Doctor prescribes medication and manages common health problems, manages high risk clients/patients, organizes and conducts clinics for specialized clients, disseminates health information, initiates and participates in research activities, performs other duties relevant to post.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

Clinical Duties

  1. Interviews clients and/or family members to obtain a health history.
  2. Conducts a complete comprehensive advanced physical and/or mental status examination including developmental assessment.
  3. Critically analyze and synthesize assessment data for sound decision-making.
  4. Makes nursing, medical and/or differential diagnoses.
  5. Formulates objectives for care of patient/family.
  6. Requests and/or perform selected diagnostic tests and procedures.
  7. Interprets selected diagnostic tests.
  8. Initiates and/or implements treatment and management
  9. Counsels and educates patients/other family members on health behavior, self-care skills and treatment options.
  10. Manages emergencies and urgent needs.
  11. Modifies treatment and management in collaboration with the Doctor as indicated by patient’s health status.
  12.  Evaluates care given.
  13. Makes referrals of patients to and receive referrals from other health care providers to ensure continuous care.
  14. Records systematically, concisely and accurately (on appropriate forms provided) data gathered, assessment made treatment and management instituted, evaluations and any other relevant information.
  15. Consults with physician when in doubt and in situations beyond the scope of his/her practice.
  16. Demonstrates advance techniques in the management of selected chronic illnesses and psycho-social conditions.
  17. Supervises the care of chronically ill/disabled client and/or family members in his/her case load.
  18. Identifies ‘at risk’ groups for health care
  19.  Implements school health programme to improve the health / well-being of the school population within an assigned Zone
  20. Conducts curative and specialist clinics, e.g. sexually Transmitted infections, skin, Diabetic and Hypertensive, Asthma clinics in Primary care.
  21. Conducts screening clinics
  22. Makes visits to homes/institutions to assess and manage health care problems (follow-up, case findings).

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

Administration

  1. Contributes to and participates in planning and policy development.
  2. Organizes and administer that aspect of the health care programme for which he/she is responsible.
  3. Delegates care functions to appropriate staff members.
  4. Supervises staff members to which functions have been delegated.
  5. Participates in quality assessment through reviews, evaluations and problem solving interventions.
  6. Evaluates practice to ensure professional, ethical, equitable and quality health care service.
  7. Submits itinerary of work and monthly report to the Supervisor

Human Resources

1.   Participate during in-service training sessions for staff

Surveillance

  1. Collect, collate and analyse data on non-communicable diseases to Identify trends.
  2. Maintain surveillance of communicable disease  and liaise with the public Nurse/Medical Doctor  infection

EPI/Cold Chain Management

1.    Monitor any adverse events associated with immunizations and take appropriate actions and report to relevant authorities 

Personal and Professional Development

  1. Responsible for updating and upgrading his/her medical knowledge and expertise in family health problems, mental health/psychiatry and related specialities by attending conferences, seminars, reading peer reviewed journals, continuing education programmes and enrolling in accredited formal education courses at a university or college nationally or internationally.
  2. Ensures that the required educational hours mandated for relicensing are met each year.

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements

v  MSc. Family Nurse Practitioner or Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

v  Certified Mental Health Nurse (in case of MHNP)

v  Registered Nurse/Midwife

Experience

v  Minimum of 5 years post-registration practice in the community, Mental Health or hospital

Licenses/Certificates

v  Registered and licensed Family Nurse Practitioner with the General Nursing Council of the British Virgin Islands.

v  Registered and licensed as Family Nurse Practitioner in country of origin

v  Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Thorough knowledge of: Principles, methods and procedures of advanced nursing ; medical and natural sciences, Nutrition, Pharmacology and Therapeutics; causes, treatment, prevention and/or early detection of communicable diseases, chronic diseases, mental illness and  disabling conditions; theories of behavior, diagnostic techniques;

v  Knowledge of Community Health , Research Methodology, available community resources; case management methods and techniques; rules, laws, regulations and ethics governing the medical and nursing management of patients, organizational policy, Staff Orders and Rules and Regulations governing Nurse Practitioners practice.

v  Skills in interviewing, conducting physical and mental examination, making assessment and management of clients’ problems according to protocol using the holistic approach.

v  Ability to make decisions and determine course of action on medical problems.

v  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

v  Ability to utilize advanced technological equipment

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
