JOB PURPOSE Under the Supervision of the Operations Manager, the Farm Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing the farm operations effectively and efficiently meet the short- and long-term production activities related to the production of crops and livestock on the estate

KEY RESPONSIBLE AREAS

 

Management/Administrative Responsibilities

 

  • Manages and coordinates farm operations
  • Organizes and supervise worker activities
  • Recommends the procurement of equipment, materials and supplies and other related items
  • Maintain appropriate computerized records
  • Provide support for animal and crop production
  • Prepares and submits weekly/monthly reports
  • Prepares and submits fortnightly payroll for workers
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of the farm management work plan
  • Manages and coordinates the operations of the farm storage facilities
  • Liaise with key professionals e.g. vet, livestock officer, agricultural input rep, MOAFM and RADA personnel and contractors to ensure smooth operation of the farm
  • Ensure farm products are prepared for MOP consumption or sale in line with MOP policy regarding, quality, quantity and timeliness of delivery
  • Provide support with the preparation of estate budget
  • Market products are prepared in accordance with the marketing policies/guidelines
  • Provide support to Operations Manager by developing, reviewing and managing repairs and maintenance schedule for all farm vehicles, machinery and farm infrastructure

Maintenance of seedling nursery and greenhouse/protective shelter

Livestock feeding and nutrition

Forage management

Abattoir maintenance

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Ensure coordination of the farm operations to support MOP objectives for the Mt. Tabor Estate
  • Collects and submits data
  • Participate in the recruitment of staff when requested
  • Supervise day-to-day activity, organise rosters and schedule tasks/activities that need to be undertaken for farm workers
  • Provide training/coaching to staff to enable them to competently carry out tasks required of them on farm
  • Conduct an annual review of on-farm staff performance
  • Ensure that health and safety policies and procedures are understood and adhered to
  • Review, implement and improve health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure new staff is inducted and aware of company policies and are given role clarity.
  • Ensure statutory deductions for staff are adhered to


PERFORMANCE STANDARD

  • Animals and forages stored and disposed of according to guidelines
  • Monthly reports prepared within specified time frame
  • Projects implemented and monitored within specified time frame
  • Vehicles, machinery and equipment maintained and operational according to set standards
  • Work plans and budgets prepared and submitted within established time frame
  • Reports are prepared and submitted within specified time frame
  • Livestock maintained according to set standards
  •  Farm (Livestock and crop) buildings maintained according to standards
  • Staff needs are clearly identified and addressed
  • Staff performance meets or exceeds set targets

  • Sound knowledge of modern farm management
  • Sound knowledge of  short and long term crop agronomy
  • Good knowledge Irrigation, Soil  and Water Management
  • Safe equipment operation and safety rules associated with agricultural production
  • Good Business & Inventory Management skills

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree in General Agriculture inclusive of Agronomy and Animal Science
  • Three years on-farm or research station management experience

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB

  • Most work performed outdoors; regular exposure to livestock, dirt, dust, noise, adverse weather conditions, chemical and mechanical hazards when operating farm tools/equipment.
  • Should own or operate a reliable transport
