The Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is a specialized agency with the responsibility for the care and protection of children, especially those who are at risk or have been victims of abuse or neglect.

The Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is seeking to recruit for the role of Educator, on contract.

The Educator at the Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, will play a vital role in shaping the lives of vulnerable children who have experienced maltreatment and are in the care of the Authority. The incumbent will be responsible for teaching the children and will advocate for their educational rights and needs to ensure they have access to quality education and support services, including appropriate educational placements, accommodations and resources to address barriers to learning and promote academic success. The incumbent must possess a keen eye to identify and address academic, behavioral, and developmental challenges with creative solutions.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education specializing in Primary/ Secondary School Education.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as a Teacher within the Primary/ Secondary School System or Teaching Children with Special Needs/Trauma.
Will be considered an asset:
  • Conflict/Crisis Management/ De-escalation.
  • Special Needs Certification.
  • Fluency in Spanish.

Principal Accountabilities/ Key Functions:

  • Administer screening assessments, conduct interviews, implement plans and review background information to obtain estimates of each child's abilities and educational levels, then develop and update Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each child.

  • Provide academic support and tutoring to children who may be/ may not be struggling academically due to disruptions in their education, learning disabilities, or language barriers.
  • Create engaging and age-appropriate lessons and activities aligned with academic standards and curriculum requirements.
  • Foster social and emotional development by creating a supportive and nurturing classroom environment where children feel safe, valued, and respected.
  • Collaborate with case managers, social workers, psychologists, and other professionals involved in the child's care to coordinate educational services and support, share information, participate in case conferences, and communicate regularly with the child's support team to address academic, behavioral, and developmental concerns.
  • Recognize and celebrate the cultural diversity of children in care by incorporating culturally relevant content, perspectives, and experiences into the curriculum.
  • Manage classroom dynamics effectively to create a conducive learning environment and advocate for the rights of the child within the educational context, ensuring their rights are upheld and respected.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and guide the educational progress of each child, maintain accurate records of educational services and activities provided, and develop an environment that promotes opportunities for the child to develop inter-relationships, self-discipline, routine, and self-confidence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Team Lead.
