EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JAMAICA CANCER SOCIETY

The Jamaica Cancer Society seeks a highly competent, self-driven and results-oriented change management executive to head its national operations. Founded 68 years ago with a mandate to ‘fight and defeat cancer in all its forms and eliminate cancer as a major health problem in Jamaica’, the Cancer Society is a leading private, non-governmental cancer services agency of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. It provides a range of services including fixed and mobile screenings for breast, cervix and prostate cancer, health and public education and advocacy campaigns, training and development seminars, counselling and support services for persons diagnosed with cancer and financial assistance for diagnostic checks, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, particularly for the most vulnerable. To carry out its work the Society undertakes an elaborate project management and fundraising programme.

KEY COMPETENCIES

Reporting to the Board of Directors and the various operational sub-Committees, the Executive Director will be charged with leading the development and implementation of a new strategic and transformational thrust for the growth of the financial and operational sustainability of the organization.

The Executive Director must be highly accomplished in the following:

  • People and organizational change management, tactical planning, and strategic thinking
  • Building and maintenance of positive relations with diverse stakeholders and disparate audiences - local and international, and including external users of services
  • Ability to promote action and broad participation of volunteers in the work of the organization
  • Understanding the culture of not-for-profit organizations, including governance and reporting, fiduciary, legislative and statutory compliance
  • Project management, proposal writing and fund-raising expertise.
  • Knowledge and insight on public health issues / public affairs management and ability to interface with major and relevant public sector agencies particularly those pertinent to the health sector management and service delivery
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE

With a proven track record in leading organizational change and the smooth transition of business culture, structures and practices, the ideal candidate must have:

  • A degree in business marketing , organization management, social policy, development communications or related academic discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years combined experience in strategic planning, business operations management and organizational leadership.
  • Strong advocacy skills and communication ability
