JOB TITLE: Deputy Director Nursing Services
SALARY SCALE: S4 ($121,547.08) Barbados Dollars
DEPARTMENT: Nursing Services Department
REPORTS TO: Director Nursing Services
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, assists the Director Nursing Services in managing the nursing department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, compliance with healthcare regulations, and the effective functioning of nursing staff and services. This role involves leadership, strategic planning, and operational oversight to support the department’s goals and objectives. Undertakes any reasonable duties as required by management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed:
Leadership and Management
- Assists in the development and implementation of nursing policies, procedures, and protocols;
- Provides leadership and support to all nursing staff;
- Fosters a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes professional growth and team cohesion;
- Oversees daily operations of the nursing department to ensure efficient and effective patient care delivery;
- Manages staffing levels, scheduling, and resource allocation to meet patient care needs and optimize departmental performance;
- Ensures compliance with hospital standards, regulatory requirements, and accreditation guidelines;
- Monitors and evaluates the quality of patient care and nursing practices, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions as needed;
- Conducts regular audits and assessments to ensure adherence to clinical and safety standards;
- Collaborates with other departments to address and resolve patient care issues and incidents;
- Assists in the development and implementation of strategic plans for nursing services aligned with the hospital’s goals and objectives;
- Participates in the creation of budgets and financial plans for the nursing department, including cost management and resource allocation;
- Supports the recruitment, orientation, and ongoing training of nursing staff;
- Facilitates professional development opportunities and continuing education to enhance staff skills and knowledge;
- Conducts performance evaluations and provides feedback to staff to support career growth and development;
- Ensures that patient care is delivered with compassion and respect, addressing patient and family concerns and needs;
- Implements and promotes patient-centered care practices and advocates for patient rights and safety;
- Collaborates with other healthcare professionals and departments to ensure coordinated and integrated patient care;
- Communicates effectively with the Director Nursing Services, executive leadership, and other stakeholders regarding departmental performance and initiatives;
- Assists in managing and responding to emergency situations and crises within the nursing department;
- Develops and implements contingency plans and procedures to ensure readiness for unforeseen events;
- Observes health and safety protocols in the execution of duties;
- Using customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials and members of the general public.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong leadership and management abilities, with experience in overseeing nursing teams and operations.
- In-depth knowledge of nursing practices, healthcare regulations, and quality improvement processes.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and address complex issues effectively.
- Advanced analytical skills to trend and analyze data.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) is required; master’s degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred. Advanced certification or specialty certification is a plus.
Extensive clinical experience in nursing, with at least 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare setting. Experience in a managerial or supervisory role is highly desirable.
