Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor - Digital Transformation (SDT), the Data Scientist (DS) plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of Phoenix Park Gas Processors Ltd (PPGPL) Technology Data Systems to drive digital transformation. The DS is responsible for collecting and processing data from various sources, ensuring its quality and accuracy. By employing statistical methods and machine learning algorithms, the DS analyses complex data to extract valuable insights that inform decision-making, optimize operations, and support strategic initiatives.

Key responsibilities include developing and implementing predictive models for forecasting trends in areas such as equipment maintenance, production optimization, and risk management. The DS also creates visualizations and reports, often utilizing tools like Power BI, to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders. Close collaboration with engineers and other professionals is essential for understanding data needs and providing data-driven solutions.

The DS will work closely with the Integration Specialist to contribute to the AI and Data Analytics Strategy, ensuring that data from various applications and external sources is harmonized to support business intelligence visualizations and the overall digitalization objectives. This involves creating and maintaining data architecture to enable AI and data analytics while integrating data into a single source of truth, ensuring consistency and quality.

Additionally, the Data Scientist is responsible for staying informed about the latest developments in data science, leveraging new techniques to tackle industry-specific challenges while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and safety protocols. The position will also be required to provide support to the Group of Companies and its subsidiaries and new business ventures as required.

Dimensions

Within this context, the objective of the DS is to create a competitive advantage for PPGPL through digitalization, which would involve, identifying and prioritizing use cases, contributing to the development of AI, analytics and data strategies, data models and data lakes that can be used to create insights through business intelligence and visualization. The position must cover the concepts of probability theory, statistical modelling, data visualization, predictive analytics, and risk management in the context of a business environment. In addition, the position should encompass working knowledge with programming languages, database languages, and software programs for delivering solution to the business.

The position of DS has a strong business analyst dimension, software development, systems development, machine learning knowledge and project management dimensions and must have a high level of planning, problem solving and risk management, presentation and interpersonal skills. The incumbent is accountable for delivering relevant Digital Transformation projects within the GPMMF. This position is key in ensuring that management has access to accurate and timely information for decision-making. The incumbent must stay informed about the organization's business direction and understand how to integrate this with management's information needs.

Collaborating closely with the Team Lead - Digital Transformation (TLDT), the SA must adhere to stringent rules, regulations, and internal controls while demonstrating leadership, initiative, and prompt responsiveness to user demands. The position operates under general guidelines, has access to supervisory assistance, functions within the rules and regulations as prescribed by the company’s policies and procedures and is bounded by clear performance expectations.

The workflow of this position is centered around leveraging AI, data analytics, and business intelligence to address and solve complex business challenges. In terms of context, this position exists within a dynamic, technology-driven environment where the integration of digitalization systems and applications is crucial for the organization's success.

The Data Scientist plays a key role in implementing robust knowledge management systems that integrate all organizational functions, utilizing PPGPL’s stage gate project development and management system. This involves developing budget estimates, project schedules, and performance metrics. The incumbent must ensure that technological solutions are aligned with business strategies, thereby providing a competitive edge. The role requires substantial internal interaction with senior leaders and middle management, as well as external engagement with consultants, system support vendors, and subject matter experts from the company group and subsidiaries. While the position operates under general guidance and does not have financial approval authority, the incumbent is responsible for managing project budgets and operational expenses within prescribed limits, ensuring alignment with company policies and strategic objectives.

The position interacts with all organizational levels, including senior leaders and middle management, and within key business functions. Externally, it coordinates with consultants, vendors, and subject matter experts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct pre-processing of both structured and unstructured data analyzing vast quantities of data to identify trends and patterns using sophisticated predictive models and machine learning algorithms.
  2. Leverage AI by identifying valuable data sources, automate collection processes to solve business challenges and develop machine learning applications according to requirements.
  3. Lead AI and machine learning model development, manage data collection processes, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to create ERP solutions. This involves project management, change management during implementation, and continuous review of system functionality.
  4. Perform statistical analyses and fine-tuning using test results, train and retrain systems when necessary.
  5. Present information using data visualization techniques. Research and implement appropriate machine learning algorithms and tools.
  6. Assists in the development and implementation of PPGPL’s Data Governance and integration initiatives to enable business intelligence visualizations.
  7. Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, upgrade, and support of data governance systems and processes, including information architecture, information integration design, ensuring high availability, information security and confidentiality.

  9. Leading and/or participating in committees and cross-functional teams in accordance with roles and duties identified as per workplans and/or team charters.
  10. Provides support to PPGPL’s subsidiary business units as listed within the duties and responsibilities as part of the shared services model between PPGPL and its subsidiary entities.

Job Specifications

Minimum Acceptable Academic Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer/Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

AND

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience

Five (5) years of relevant experience in data science including working with data analysis, machine learning and statistical modelling or a similar role.  

The following will be considered an asset:

  • Experience in the Oil and Gas Industry
  • Certification in machine learning, data analysis, programming languages or tools used in data science.

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong ability to analyze complex data and derive meaningful insights.
  • Programming Skills in Python, and SQL and PL/SQL in Oracle APEX Platform
  • Microsoft Azure SQL Database, ASA and ADF
  • Oracle Database Administration
  • Microsoft Power BI
  • Understanding of machine learning algorithms and principles, and experience with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and building ETL pipelines.
  • Project Management with a specific focus on AI and machine learning projects.
  • Proven Experience in a Data Analyst Role or Developing Data Analytical Solutions
  • Leadership, business direction and communication skills
