The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. in its quest to promote, assist and facilitate the efficient development of tourism and Barbados’ tourism product, is seeking to recruit an exceptionally skilled individual to fill the position of Communications Officer.

ROLE SUMMARY

The successful candidate will be responsible for executing public relations and communication strategies to promote Barbados as a top travel destination through communication strategies, media monitoring, and Public Relations (PR) efforts. Key tasks for the Communications Officer role include drafting press releases, managing stakeholder relationships, coordinating PR activities, tracking media coverage, assisting with crisis communications and supporting promotional events and presentations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute communication strategies to promote Barbados as a premier travel destination.
  • Monitor media coverage and public sentiment, identifying emerging issues, trends and opportunities.
  • Manage PR efforts, which include drafting press releases, coordinating media outreach and engaging with tourism stakeholders.
  • Prepare and edit reports, briefs, media talking points and engaging content, ensuring consistency in messaging.
  • Establish and sustain strong relationships with local and international media, journalists, tourism stakeholders and other key partners.
  • Build partnerships with tourism boards, local businesses, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent and effective messaging across all communication channels.
  • Assist with managing crisis communications, including monitoring potential issues, supporting response strategies and coordinating internal communications.
  • Track media coverage and assess communication effectiveness using relevant tools.
  • Coordinate local PR activities and collaborate with regional and global PR entities.
  • Assist with planning and executing media and promotional events for key tourism stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver tourism-related presentations to stakeholders and the public.
  • Represent the company at events, trade shows, and other promotional activities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field with at least five (5) years’ relevant work experience in a similar environment.
  • Familiarity with media relations and public relations strategies.
  • Experience in crisis communication management.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Sound planning, organizing and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and collaborative skills.
  • Influencer with strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Sound decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Results-oriented, with the ability to work under pressure and adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Working knowledge of the tourism industry would be an asset.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications.
