Job Summary

The Civil Engineering Trainee reports directly to the Vice President, Engineering and will be required to support civil engineering related activities and tasks for projects in development and execution. This will be done under the guidance and supervision of the Vice President, Engineering with co-ordination by the Senior Engineers.  In addition, the Civil Engineering Trainee will be required to provide support to ensure Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements on projects are met as well as to provide support to initiatives in the Engineering department. The position is also required to provide related support to the group of companies, its subsidiaries and new business ventures as required.

Dimensions

The Civil Engineer Trainee reports to the Vice President- Engineering and operates under the guidance of the Senior Engineers. This position spans across various critical aspects of project development within the engineering department. The position entails active involvement in civil engineering activities and reviews, ensuring adherence to the Group Project Management Framework (GPMMF) while supporting project development from conception to execution. This includes contributing to the formulation of Design Basis, conducting thorough analyses, and providing recommendations to address plant issues when needed. The role extends to supporting process safety applications, such as Management of Change (MOC) and HAZOP and assisting in the preparation and review of civil designs to uphold compliance with industry standards. Additionally, the position involves aiding in project execution, employing project control measures to meet targets effectively.

Nature & Scope

The role of the Civil Engineering Trainee encompasses a range of responsibilities within the realm of project development and execution. As part of the Engineering team, the nature of this position revolves around providing crucial support across various stages of project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with established frameworks and standards while striving for operational excellence. The role demands a keen attention to detail and a thorough understanding of civil engineering principles. Moreover, it includes active participation in project framing exercises, such as SWOT analysis, and the application of Process Safety elements, such as Management of Change (MOC) and HAZOP. The position also involves in assisting the preparation and review of civil designs for new installations and modifications, emphasizing the importance of adherence to codes and standards to ensure structural integrity and safety. Additionally, the role entails active collaboration with cross-functional teams, including the Operations department, to provide necessary engineering support and contribute to the successful execution of projects. The scope further encompasses the utilization of data analytics and trend analyses to drive continuous improvement initiatives within the Engineering department.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with civil engineering activities and reviews related to project development works projects in compliance with the Group Project Management Framework (GPMMF). Project development activities include the development of Design Basis, Project Framing including SWOT analysis, conceptual designs, front-end engineering designs (FEED), cost estimates, schedules, risk assessments and gate review packages and presentations.
  •  Under guidance, conduct analyses and evaluations, making recommendations to address plant issues. Assist with providing Civil Engineering support to Operations when required.
  •   Provide support in the application of Process Safety elements to project development and execution works.  These include Management of Change (MOC), HAZOP, Job Safety Risk Analysis (JSRAs) and Process Safety (PSI) information.
  •  Under guidance prepares and reviews civil designs for new installations and modifications while ensuring compliance with established codes and standards. 
  • Under guidance, provide assistance with project execution works. This includes the application of project control measures to ensure the project targets are met.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of data analytics and perform trend analyses related to project performance. Assist with improvement initiatives in the Engineering Department.
  • Performs such individual assignments as the supervisor may direct; establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department and the organisation. 

Job Specifications

Minimum Acceptable Academic Qualifications

B.Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited tertiary institution.

AND

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience

Two (2) years of related experience.

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office - Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power point.
  • Good interpersonal skills; demonstrates integrity, assertiveness, and initiative.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written.
