JOB PURPOSE:

The Chief Operations Officer (COO) is responsible for leading the Branch Network and Operations of BPWCCUL, to achieve the agreed purpose, goals and vision in accordance with the strategic objectives of the organization. These areas include Branch Operations Network; Credit; Card Services and Operations Centralised Services. The COO is expected to work closely with the Board of Directors, Group CEO, other Senior Managers and stakeholders to ensure the growth of the Credit Union.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Works with the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) to execute the Group’s vision and bring the mission to life.
  • Develops, executes and monitors the Credit Union business unit’s strategic plan.
  • Sets targets for each department under his/her control and ensures that they are met.
  • Establishes, maintains and grows the Credit Union business unit’s competitive advantage, brand, viability and position within the market.
  • Analyses the markets, identifying weaknesses as well as seizing opportunities for growth and expansion.
  • Monitors the Credit Union business unit’s progress and makes recommendations for change.
  • Communicates and gains buy-in to the Group vision, values, strategies and principles and Credit Union business unit’s strategies and goals.

 Operations

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the Credit Union’s branch network activities.
  • Responsible for establishing and attaining the Credit Union business unit’s operational goals.
  • Directs and manages the Credit Union business unit’s resources under his/her purview to achieve corporate objectives.
  • Enhances the financial, economic and social wellbeing of members and customers in consonance with co-operative principles.
  • Makes recommendations and executes the maintenance, growth and development of the human, financial and technological resources of the Credit Union business unit.
  • Assisting with public relations, marketing, branding and development of the Credit Union business unit’s products and services.
  • Provides the highest level of customer and member relations and service against identified criteria.
  • Develops effective management and leaders within his/her departments.
  • Manages the performance, engagement (motivation) and conduct of employees within his/her departments.

 Finance

  • Ensures the protection of the funds of depositors and the assets of the Credit Union business unit.
  • Reports on and makes recommendations on financial budgets and timeframes, monitoring and managing the performance of the Credit Union business unit against budget.

 Regulations and Compliance

  • Manages the organisation in compliance with policies, limitation and rules as outlined by the Board of BPWCCUL.
  • Ensures timely and regular compliance with regulatory and statutory laws, rules and orders as appropriate.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensures the principle risks within sphere of control are identified, monitored and managed to minimize exposure for the Credit Union business unit.

 Stakeholders

  • Establishes and maintains appropriate communications with members, employees and relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Supports the GCEO to plan and execute the Annual General Meeting with members.
  • Sits on and participates in committees of the Board as required.
  • Sells/cross sells the organisation’s products and services. Identify referral opportunities and make relevant referrals to assist the branch to meet its objectives.
  • Any other duties ancillary or related to the foregoing.

 Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in a relevant area of study with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a senior executive role preferably within the financial services sector.

 Knowledge/Skills and Abilities

  • A proven track record of leading organisational success and building high performing teams.
  • Strong and demonstratable technical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading change.
  • Established as a respected member within the financial services sector.
  • Experienced in stakeholder management and engagement. 
  • Demonstrated experience in good critical decision making.
  • Proven track record of recognising and seizing business opportunities that can lead to sustainable growth.
  • An established positive relationship with regulators is desirable.
  • In depth understanding and relevant experience within the financial services industry.
  • Experience, and knowledge of business administration.
  • Ability to understand, and interprets financial statements accurately in order to make informed decisions regarding the position’s sphere of control.
  • Strong knowledge and appreciation of financial regulations.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of customer relations and customer service.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of integrity, confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent Communication and Interpersonal skills.
  • Good working knowledge of employee motivation and performance management.
  • Decision maker.
  • Ability to create high performing teams.

 Working Conditions

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
    • Long hours outside of normal working hours are required in order to fulfil the requirements of the role.
    • May be required to travel for the effective functioning of this role.
