The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the effective management of the Engineering function of the Brewery, Bottling Hall and Utilities departments, in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner while maximizing plant and equipment reliability and availability.

JOB SUMMARY:

The position will be responsible for the effective management of the Engineering function of the Brewery, Bottling Hall and Utilities departments, in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner while maximizing plant and equipment reliability and availability.

The Chief Engineer reports to the Head of Operations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensures compliance with all company policies/procedures as well as governmental, internationally accepted safety standards, and technical specifications and requirements.
  2. Makes recommendations to Senior Management on safety issues, capital expenditure projects, and develop and administer an annual departmental budget.
  3. Development and performance management of subordinate staff while providing effective leadership and ensuring compliance with company policies/procedures. Also identifies appropriate training for all maintenance employees.
  4. Reviews the operation of plant equipment and systems constantly, to minimize unplanned downtime, anticipate and solve problems in a timely manner, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  5. Tracks, analyzes and improves key maintenance parameters such as asset utilization, maintenance cost, PM compliance, schedule compliance etc.
  6. Monitors the use and inventories of spare parts, maintenance supplies, and equipment and initiates reordering when necessary.
  7. Installs and commissions new equipment and makes recommendations for re-engineering of plant/equipment.
  8. Participates in the selection of new equipment and in designing and implementing new projects.
  9. Produces monthly departmental reports and special reports/studies as required.
  10. Liaises with contractors to ensure external equipment repairs are completed in a timely basis and of a high quality.
  11. Provides the Purchasing and Stores Department with information on stock/spares requirements and usage, assists in stock analysis and provides adequate specifications to ensure that items purchased are of the requisite quality.
  12. Works with Operations and Maintenance Planning Department to plan/schedule work in order to maximize plant/equipment availability, plan/execute shutdowns and maintain and upgrade the Preventative Maintenance systems and procedures.
  13. Manages manpower to meet operational needs.
  14. Assists on any committees/groups/taskforces that may be formed to deal with specific issues, and any other duties/responsibilities that may be assigned by Head of Operations.
  15. Maintains all plant utilities including water, electricity and air systems.
  16. Ensures continuous improvement to Predictive Maintenance Programme.
  17. Ensure all inputs in the ERP system are completed accurately and on time.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to work within budgets and assigned deadlines
  • Training & knowledge in PLC programming Siemens Step 7 and RS Logix 5000
  • Knowledge of electrical design of medium voltage systems and power distribution systems
  • Must be a logical, organized and quick thinker
  • Must have sound communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be a strong team leader
  • Knowledge of computer/data base systems would also be an asset
  • Confident decision-making ability

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Over five (5) years’ experience in a management position, leading key projects and teams.
  • BSc. Electrical Engineering and an MBA would be an asset.
  • Over ten (10) years’ experience in the manufacturing industry.
