The Chief Accountant is responsible for overseeing and managing a team responsible for all accounting functions and regulatory compliance. The role is also integral to achieving the most efficient use of the Group’s cash resources.

JOB TITLE:  CHIEF ACCOUNTANT

DIRECT REPORT TO: Chief Financial Officer

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the preparation, analysis, and timely submission (monthly, quarterly, and annually) of financial statements for the Group, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Effective management of the Group’s general ledger, by overseeing the maintenance and reconciliation of general ledger accounts, through the processing of accurate and complete accounting transactions, and the effective management of day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department.
  • Lead and act as the primary point of contact for external auditors, facilitating an efficient and timely audit process and addressing audit findings.
  • Ensure the timely reconciliation and monitoring of intercompany transactions monthly.
  • Drive process improvements through the continuous evaluation and enhancement of financial reporting processes and procedures, and the internal control environment to increase efficiency, accuracy, and compliance to best practice.
  • Assist in the effective management of the Group’s cash flows.
  • Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of compliance with the terms and condition of banking and credit facilities, including the adherence to repayment of loans within the contracted timelines.
  • Lead and maintain a suitable staff structure for the Accounting Department, including the management and mentoring of team members, provision of guidance, performance appraisals, and recommendations for professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee and manage the Group’s property, plant and equipment portfolio (i.e. Fixed Asset), including the adequacy of the Group’s insurance portfolio.
  • Ensure tax compliance through the coordination, preparation and filing of tax returns, ensuring compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to determine accounting and tax implications for all material business decisions.
  • Work with senior management to ensure compliance with internal controls.
  • Participate in the annual budget process, and special projects and initiatives related to financial reporting and general ledger management as required.

 QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS accounting standards.

 EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • ACCA Level III (completed or pursuing) and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related business degree
  • At least five (5) years progressive experience in financial reporting and general ledger management
  • Understanding of tax regulations and compliance
  • Strong business acumen

 TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel may be required in carrying out duties.
