Job Summary 

The Chief Engineer (Contract) is directly responsible to the Master for the function and administration of the Engineering department and for the safe, efficient and economical operation and up-keep of all machinery throughout the vessel. The incumbent shall operate and maintain the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery as required by the Master, subject to the limitations of its power, speed and fuel consumption.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates the vessel system within legal requirements of pertinent regulatory agencies and manufacturer’s manuals.
  • Ensures the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the vessel’s operating systems and spaces including but not limited to, main propulsion, power generation and management systems etc.
  • Manages all below deck cargoes and engineering stores; tracks and reports on the consumption of fuel, water, lube oils, hydraulic oils and engineering spare parts and supplies.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs all engines, pumps, machinery, and electrical components.
  • Maintains adequate critical spares and general vessel parts inventory levels.
  • Ensures that all Engineers/ Technicians have a thorough knowledge of the propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, piping systems with their valves and connections, including the use of emergency and fire-fighting appliances.
  • Ensures compliance with MARPOL Prevention Regulations.
  • Responsible for the effective administration and management of the performance management appraisal system for employees.
  • Supervises contractors’ repair/maintenance works on the vessel and submits reports thereafter on the quality of work completed to effect payment.
  • Performs budgeting and cost control measures on ship spares, maintenance and docking requirements.
  • Performs technical compliance audits and investigation on defects/failures on a regular scheduled basis to ensure conformance to standards.
  • Ensures that all copies of technical statutory and equipment certificates (life rafts, compasses, etc) are properly maintained and documented.
  • Prepares and submit monthly reports to Executive Management.
  • Any other engineering responsibilities as assigned by the Master.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations as are applicable to TTIT Operations e.g. Procurement Act/Financial Regulations
  • Excellent analytical, technical trouble shooting and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Knowledge of vessel operating processes, procedures, and technology.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, bend and climb ladders that have capacity limits of 300lbs
  • Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to report for duty on time (always)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, work under pressure and meet stated deadlines

Minimum Academic Qualifications, Training and Working Experience

  • STCW Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer Reg. III/2 (Unlimited) Motorships from an Administration recognized by the Flag State.
  • Current valid Seafarers Medical Certificate (STCW Compliant), for unrestricted service
  • Basic Safety Training inclusive of Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats, Advance Fire Fighting and Certificate of Proficiency in Medical Care (STCW Compliant)
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (ISPS) Certificate
  • Crowd and Crisis Management Certificate
  • Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) at the Management Level
  • Specific training and experience in management of major on-board systems by type and brand or be available to be trained as may be required
  • Not less than four (4) years’ experience as a Marine Engineer on board High Speed Crafts (HSC)
  • Must satisfy the specified medical requirements for fitness
