St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) is a dynamic and expanding hospital organization, currently transitioning to the new St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH)—a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of Sint Maarten, its neighboring islands, and the nearly two million annual visitors. With a staff of over 425 FTEs and 28 medical specialists, SMMC is committed to delivering safe, high-quality healthcare in a culturally diverse environment.

Role Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will join the two-member Board of Directors (CEO and CFO) and hold joint responsibility for the strategic, tactical, and operational management of the hospital. The CFO leads the Finance Department and is specifically responsible for all financial policy, risk management, budgeting, planning, and reporting functions. This role is vital to securing SMMC’s long-term financial sustainability and its position as the leading healthcare institution in the region.

The Board of Directors reports to the Supervisory Council (SC) and works closely with external stakeholders, including governmental bodies, insurers, financial institutions, and healthcare partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Financial Leadership:
  • Develop and execute long-term financial strategies aligned with the hospital’s mission and future development, including the transition to SMGH.
  • Co-develop the hospital’s strategic plan and budget and monitor the financial implementation of strategic initiatives.
  • Identify financial risks, advise on mitigation strategies, and ensure compliance with healthcare-related financial regulations.
  • Lead and optimize the financial planning and control cycle, cash flow, treasury, and working capital management.
  • Oversee all financial reporting, including the preparation of daily, monthly, annual, and multi-year financial statements.
  • Ensure proper financial administration and audit readiness throughout the organization.
  • Monitor performance and provide forecasts and insights to support informed decision-making.
  • Operational and Financial Management: 
  • Organizational Leadership and Governance
  • Serve as an integral part of the Board of Directors with shared responsibility for key strategic decisions in accordance with the Statutes of SMMC.
  • Establish financial policies and procedures for administration, procurement, information services, and risk management.
  • Maintain open communication with the Management Team and foster a results-driven, collaborative culture within the organization.
  • Coach and supervise the Finance Department (approx. 50 FTE), ensuring staff development and performance excellence.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the financial representative in strategic negotiations and complex deliberations with insurers, government, consultants, and suppliers.
  • Prepare documentation and engage in Supervisory Council and Board of Directors approval processes for major financial commitments and investments.

 Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in senior financial leadership, preferably within a healthcare or comparable complex institutional setting.
  • Deep knowledge of financial policy, healthcare finance regulations, and strategic budgeting.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and drive financial strategy in multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Strong understanding of the socio-political and cultural context of St. Maarten and the BES islands.
  • Fluent in English and Dutch; proficiency in French or other languages is a plus.

Terms of Employment

  • The position is offered on a Performance-Based Contract of up to five years, with the possibility of renewal based on achieved performance.
  • Remuneration is competitive and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
  • The position may require occasional travel to attend meetings, conferences, and site visits.
  • The candidate is expected to reside in St. Maarten for the entire Contract duration.
