Associate Attorney-at-law: Dispute & Risk Management Department

The Associate Attorney works closely with Senior Attorneys to manage cases from beginning to end. He/she conducts research to support the Senior Attorney or advise clients, aid in the development of strategies, prepares legal documents. He/she conducts research, aids in the development of strategies or legal structures, prepares legal documents and liaises closely with clients, regulators, registries (or other government agencies) and other attorneys involved in the matter during the conduct of the matter.

The Associate Attorney supports Senior Attorneys to manage a matter from beginning to end. An Associate attorney in the Dispute and Risk Management Department must be knowledgeable, detail-oriented, proactive and results-driven team player. He/she must be adept at communicating with the internal and external client.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized and accredited institution;
  • Legal Education Certificate (LEC) or Legal Practicing Certificate (LPC);
  • Admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago.

Core Skills:

  • Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for clients;
  • Preparation of  briefs and other legal documents in a timely manner;
  • Possess strong research skills - study the Constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations, and ordinances to determine ramifications for cases;
  • Knowledgeable about Court procedures and of the rules of evidence;
  • Ability to develop relationships with clients based on trust;
  • Ability to manage and administer client and matter files.

 

Experience:

  • Up to three (3) years as an Attorney-at-Law with litigation and dispute resolution experience, particularly as an instructing attorney;
  • Working knowledge of the Laws of Trinidad and Tobago;
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and references utilised in legal research;
  • Knowledge of court procedures, legal principles and practices.

  • Intermediate computer skills:

(the ability to quickly adapt to and use computer programmes);

  • Analytic skills:

(the ability to collect and analyse information as well as problem-solve);

  • Legal research:

(the process of identifying and retrieving information necessary to support legal decision-making);

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Drafting skills:

(laying out documents logically, keeping writing clear and concise, avoiding grammatical and vocabulary errors and finally, editing and correcting documents in a systematic and thorough way);

  • Client relations:

(good listening skills, oral and written communication, analytical and problem-solving skills and teamwork based on the organization's commitment to meet client needs while making clients feel welcome and valued.);

  • Multi-tasking skills:

(the ability to successful manage more than one task);

  • Strong organisational skills will be an asset.
