Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager – Feed Production, the Assistant Manager - Feed Production, is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the daily operations of the feed production circuits within the facility. This role involves ensuring efficient production processes, setting and maintaining high-quality standards, and adhering to HSE regulations. The incumbent will also be responsible for managing a team of production operators and operatives, coordinating with other departments, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to optimize production efficiency through appropriate planning, and cost reduction initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

• Oversees all the integrated processes required in the production of feed products ensuring that process parameters are maintained. Plans, directs, controls and co-ordinates all production lines of the Feed Mill.
• Ensures all the raw material necessary for the timely fulfilment of production targets are requested and available.
• Monitors the production processes of the Feed Mill on a continuous basis, making visual checks of machinery to ensure proper functioning and smooth operation.
• Collectively determines production plans and schedules in keeping with the Company’s Marketing and Sales commitments.
• Ensures that strict quality control and animal feed safety standards are adhered to, so as to minimize off-spec feed products.
• Ensures that grain/raw material samples are taken and sent to the laboratory for analysis in accordance with the Quality Plan.
• Establishes, in collaboration with the Maintenance Department, procedures and schedules for routine inspection and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
• Makes recommendations for process equipment upgrades or replacement.
• Ensures that all health, safety and environmental considerations are adhered to.
• Co-ordinates all planned equipment overhauls in the Feed Mill in a manner as to minimize plant downtime.
• Assists in the preparation of the annual departmental budgets and operating plans.
• Co-ordinates all the resource requirements necessary for the delivery of all the production outcomes of the Feed Mill.
• Assists in the development of training and development plans for subordinates consistent with the department and company objectives.
• Develops and reviews Standard Operation Procedures and Work Instructions as required.
• Ensure all production related documents, records and reports are prepared and submitted accurately and within specified deadlines.
• Proactively manage time and attendance of reporting staff to maximise productivity.
• Investigate, initiate, and close any disciplinary issues with employees as required.
• Complies with the organisation’s GMP, Food Safety, HACCP & Integrated Pest Management programs.
• Ensures that all elevator operation activities are in accordance with required safety, health and environmental policies and procedures.
• Practices proper industrial hygiene and timely cleaning of all areas in accordance with NFM’s housekeeping standards.
• Ensures spills are immediately picked up in keeping with Food Safety requirements.
• Execute any other deliverables as directed by the Manager- Feed Production

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Production/Mechanical/Electrical/Agricultural Engineering or related discipline.
• Diploma in Process Plant Operations is advantageous but not essential.
• Five (5) years of production management experience, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory role. 
• Sound knowledge of trends and advances in Feed Milling and Feed equipment technology is advantageous but not essential.
• Understanding of applicable Safe Quality Food (SQF) code requirements.
• Sound knowledge of OSH Authority Regulations as it applies to manufacturing.
• Familiarity with and track record of adherence to HSSE Policy.
• Sound human resource management capabilities.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
• Demonstrated organization skills, personal dependability and commitment.
