Assistant/Associate Professor/Professor of Pathology

AUACOM is seeking a faculty member for the Department of Pathophysiology. Candidates should have an MBBS or M.D. in Pathology, strong teaching skills, and a background in medical education. Experience with the U.S. MD curriculum, USMLE, and diverse academic environments is preferred.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Pathophysiology. The department is mostly engaged in teaching activities while scientific and medical education research is strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will be a team player, receptive to feedback, possess excellent written and communication skills, have a strong service record and possess a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching Pathology. Required qualifications include an MBBS, M.D in Pathology.  Candidates who have qualifications and experience in medical education (master's degree, fellowship or higher) with demonstrated evidence of how they’ve applied it to daily instructional practices are of particular interest. This position requires an understanding of U.S. MD curriculum and the USMLE examination requirements. Candidates must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at AUA.

Responsibilities:

As is directed by the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences, or the Co-Chairs of the Department of Pathophysiology

1. Be responsible for academic advising of assigned students in meeting their respective educational goals, exercising professional judgement based upon the faculty member's knowledge of the subject matter, needs of the individual students, teaching strategies of AUA, interpersonal relationships and teaching theory.
2. The successful candidate will provide excellent, innovative teaching in pathology with a focus on clinically relevant pathophysiology of disease and morphology.
3. Able to develop and deliver teaching content incorporating evidence based pedagogical methods using active learning techniques in the classroom, tutorials, Team based learning (TBL) sessions and small group activities.
4. Formulate learning outcomes aligned with assessments, small group activities and other active learning sessions.
5. Design small group activities, TBLs, tutorials, TBLs integrating physiology topics in a system-based curriculum that incorporates all the relevant basic science disciplines of anatomy, biochemistry, molecular science, Pathology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology.
6. Collaborate with basic and clinical science educators in coordinating   inter-disciplinary integration of pathology/ pathophysiology with other disciplines within system-based courses.
7. Contribute actively to developing formative, low- stake and summative assessments and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
8. Facilitate small group discussions, TBLs and tutorials in pathology based on integrated content other than pathology.
9. Use student feedback to improve teaching.
10. Participate in, revise and/ develop courses and curricula.
11. Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to students, including mentoring.
12. Participate in academic programs.
13. Direct and participate in educational programs of the Department within which the faculty member is assigned.
14. Provide information and assistance with academic programs of the College of Medicine as may be requested.
15. Compile and/ or research data as may be assigned.
16. Attend and participate in campus, departmental program, meetings, and activities of the College of Medicine.
17. Remain current in respective field(s) of study.
18.  Impart knowledge to students at the College of Medicine in a manner that does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
19. Carry out other duties and responsibilities consistent with the position of a faculty member of a medical school as may arise from time to time and as assigned by AUA through the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences, the Chair of the department, or such other person as is duly authorized by AUA.

Service to the university:

1. Participate in faculty meetings.
2. Actively participate in faculty development programs
3. Assume administrative duties including service on standing committees of the school either in an elected or an appointed capacity.
4. Contribute to the local community through community outreach activities sponsored by the institution.

Research:

1. Attend scientific meetings at least once a year in one’s field of specialization or medical education.

Qualifications and essential requirements:

1. MBBS, MD Pathology,
2. Teaching experience in a similar position within the US, Canada, Caribbean medical school or UK institution medical training. 
3. For Assistant Professor: a minimum of three years teaching experience in the pre-clinical curriculum at accredited universities
4. For Associate Professor: a minimum of five years teaching experience in the pre-clinical curriculum at accredited universities
5. Excellent working knowledge of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) content areas relevant to pathology/ pathophysiology.
6. Experience with evidence based pedagogical principles of teaching and use of technology in teaching and learning.
7. Demonstrate commitment to support the mission and vision of the university and diversity of students and faculty of the institution.
8. Outstanding communication skills in speaking, presentation, and collaboration with students, faculty members, and others.
9. Demonstrate ability to interact professionally, and cultural sensitivity.
10. Ability to advise and train remediating students.
11. Organize and schedule appointments and assignments.
12. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
13. Demonstrate skill to work independently, and complete assignments under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities.
14. Engage in scholarly activities as part of continuing education.

Skills:

1. Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly PowerPoint and Word are required.
2. Experience with audience response systems is an advantage.
