Assistant Accountant

Location: Port of Spain

Department: Finance

Job Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented Assistant Accountant with strong accounting skill and a service focused mindset to support our finance team in managing day-to-day accounting and financial tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Candidate will be required to assist with developing and implementing controls and procedures that enables timely and accurate processing, analysis and reporting. Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment is a plus.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs investigations and handles queries on Client Accounts in addition to preparing account analyses, statements, and reconciliations when necessary.
  • Reviews client invoices for accuracy and approve posting to general ledger.
  • Reconcile client trust accounts and ensure compliance with legal trust accounting.
  • Prepares transfers from trust account to general accounts ensuring accurate posting to general ledger.
  • Checks stamp duty and other statutory disbursement vouchers prior to payment.
  • Performs monthly billing close-off procedures, ensuring all transactions are accounted for and all processing is completed.
  • Coordinate with attorneys and staff regarding billing inquiries and discrepancies.
  • Prepares Management Fee invoices for H.S. Services.
  • Circulation of Daily Banking for receipting and posting to general ledger.
  • Preparation of monthly bank reconciliations, investigation and correction of variances.
  • Preparation of V.A.T. return.
  • Prepares quarterly payments re: Business Levy, Green Fund Levy.
  • Reconciles inter/intra company accounts.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial reports and summaries for management review.
  • Assists in the preparation of year-end accounts and audit schedules as necessary.
  • Maintain proper documentation for audits and assist with audit processes when necessary.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the accounting department, including filing, data entry, and record maintenance.
  • Assists the Manager Finance as required.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or pursuing level two ACCA
  • Minimum 3 years of practical working experience in accounting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, on-site position, office hours 8:15 am to 4:15pm.
  • Occasional overtime may be required during busy periods (e.g., end-of-month or end-of-year closing).
