The UWI-CARICOM Project<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The UWI-CARICOM Project is a mechanism established by the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat to help inform CARICOM’s decision making processes, Caribbean leaders and tertiary institutions on the range of issues and initiatives which inform Caribbean growth and development through integration. It was on the 7th of December 1999 that the CARICOM Secretariat entered into an agreement with the UWI for the two institutions to work together on a range of issues. <\/p>\n

What does UWI-CARICOM Project do?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

This project provides the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the global population with pertinent perspectives on CARICOM and the work of its Secretariat through the provision of material, based on rigorous research contained in invaluable publications namely the “Integrationist” Journal as well as radio and television documentaries such as the video documentary “Integrate of Perish”. In addition, the UWI-CARICOM Project has chosen Cultural showcasing as an avenue for exposing distinguishing attributes of the Caribbean people. <\/p>\n

Information Giving<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Information is disseminated via mass media, research and documentation centres, university, national, school and community libraries. Besides using mass media for publishing or broadcasting a finished product and relying on documentation centres to store documents for ready access, the UWI-CARICOM Project is continuously developing and maintaining contacts within the Region, who can utilise the products of the Project and facilitate snowballing in the spread of information. <\/p>\n

Empowering CARICOM Nationals<\/strong> <\/p>\n

A high priority for the UWI-CARICOM Project, through its productions, is to assist Caribbean leaders and other decision and policy makers to make informed choices for the benefit of the Region. Just as important for the Project is reaching nationals of the Community at all levels to aid essential understanding of how the integrative process will impact their lives. The content of every book, paper, journal, documentary or cultural
Programme produced is intended to awaken the consciousness of CARICOM’s people into achieving the vision of integration. <\/p>\n

How old is UWI-CARICOM?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The UWI-CARICOM Project was established on 7 December 1999 when the CARICOM Secretariat entered into an agreement with the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, Kingston, Jamaica for the two institutions to work together on a range of issues that impact the development and integration of the Caribbean Community. <\/p>\n

Major players in UWI-CARICOM<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The project is provided guidance by the Most Honourable Professor Sir Kenneth O. Hall, ON, OJ. A management and administrative team that address the everyday functioning of the Project is based at the CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana. Consultants are contracted on an as needs basis.<\/p>\n
