font-family: Verdana;\">Career Expert Says Pay  Attention to Body Language When Meeting Prospective Employers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Most  executive-level job applicants carefully consider what they are going to  say during the interview, but few take into account the nonverbal cues  they may be sending.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Paul McDonald, executive  director of Robert Half Management Resources, points out that one&#8217;s body  language when responding to interview questions can have as great an  influence on hiring managers as the answers themselves.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;Candidates often spend  several hours preparing for interviews, particularly at the executive  level, where they are expected to enter meetings with a solid  understanding of the business, the industry and the position,&#8221; McDonald  said.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>&#8220;Unfortunately, all of this hard work can  be undermined if the applicant fails to pay attention to the manner in  which he or she is communicating.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">McDonald outlines eight  common interview pitfalls as well as advice for avoiding them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Having a weak handshake\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Right or wrong, many  hiring managers believe if your handshake is weak, you may have a  personality to match.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A firm, quick grip conveys  self-confidence and professionalism.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Avoiding eye contact\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">While it&#8217;s tempting to  admire the view outside the office window, use eye contact when speaking  to the interviewer.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Guard against staring by  occasionally redirecting your glance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Crossing your arms\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Intentional or not, this  tells interviewers you&#8217;re on the defensive &#8211; and it may have the same  effect on them.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Keep your arms open and to the  side, or loosely fold your hands in your lap.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Invading the  interviewer&#8217;s space\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Leaning forward in your seat, for example, may be  moving out of the comfort zone between you and the interviewer.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Sit upright but relaxed in your chair.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Making tense facial  expressions\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">It&#8217;s been said it takes 43 muscles to frown.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Try  to sense when your facial muscles are tightening, and smile when  appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Nodding persistently\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Nod as a natural  response when you strongly agree on ideas or opinions the hiring manager  has presented.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Overusing hand motions\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">While gestures can help  emphasise important points, too much movement is distracting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Tapping your fingers or  feet\n<p><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">You might have a nervous habit, but these actions will give  the hiring manager the impression you are anxious to end the interview.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Instead, focus your energy on the conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;
