{"id":13,"date":"2014-07-31T11:31:35","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T11:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caribbeanjobs.com\/careeradvice\/negotiating-salary-can-be-tricky-in-an-interview"},"modified":"2014-11-19T12:00:05","modified_gmt":"2014-11-19T12:00:05","slug":"negotiating-salary-can-be-tricky-in-an-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caribbeanjobs.com\/careeradvice\/negotiating-salary-can-be-tricky-in-an-interview","title":{"rendered":"Negotiating salary can be tricky in an interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>How to sidestep the salary debate in that job  interview.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You may want to dodge the issue of salary until  the job offer is on the table. &#8220;The challenge is to save the salary  discussion until you have received an offer,&#8221; said Terry Pile, a coach  from The Five O&#8217;Clock Club, a US career-coaching and outplacement  service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With an offer on the table, you know that the employer wants you  and will be more amenable to negotiating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Five O&#8217;Clock  Club provides the following strategies to negotiating salary:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid the subject<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make a general statement such as, &#8220;My salary is negotiable.&#8221; If the employer continues to push the subject, explain you need to know more  about the responsibilities involved before negotiating a salary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reverse the question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pile suggests asking the employer, &#8220;What is the range you normally pay for this position?&#8221; or &#8220;What do you consider this position to be  worth?&#8221; If the pay is higher than expected, don&#8217;t appear too excited. If it is lower, you may be able to negotiate other perks such as medical  benefits or holidays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set a range<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Know your worth in the market before the interview by doing a little  research. Consult professional and trade associations, talk to current  and former employees, and check out our online salary surveys.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A job is not always about money,&#8221; Pile said. &#8220;There are many other  benefits that may be negotiated in addition to salary. Consider a  signing bonus, extra vacation time or telecommuting one day a week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Remember, salary is not the only thing to consider when applying for a new job.
