The Structural Principal Engineer is responsible for the overall technical, budget, schedule and resourcing responsibility for the discipline on a project.

The Principal Engineer will operate as Discipline Lead Engineer or similar on a designated contract or project – see Discipline Lead Engineer Job Description for requirements of that role.
- Responsible for resolving complex technical issues with the engineering discipline.
- Demonstrates the appropriate competence level for the job.
- Is a source for guidance on a majority of discipline applications.
- Coordinate technical matters within discipline and with other disciplines as required.
- Technical assurance of discipline deliverables, discipline content of IDC prints and vendor documents.
- Assist with the development of discipline personnel.
- Knowledge of and adherence to Massy Wood Group and project specific Project Management Systems and Procedures relevant to the role.
- Develop discipline scopes of work, estimates and schedules.
- Manage discipline scope of work, budget and schedule with respect to delivery, monitoring and changes on allocated projects.
- Knowledge and application of client specific standards.
- Discipline focal point for the allocated projects.
- Represent Massy Wood Group to clients and suppliers / vendors in a professional manner.
- Responsible for using opportunities at meetings with clients and suppliers/ vendors to learn of additional work which Massy Wood Group could undertake and to promote Massy Wood Group’s capabilities.
- Assist Discipline Function Lead with management of discipline personnel working on allocated projects.
- Assist with Resource planning to maintain adequate staff levels considering short and long term requirements of the allocated projects.
- Follow procedures for document control and discipline design, e.g. creation of discipline design deliverables, use and retention of check prints / IDC prints.
- Check discipline deliverables, discipline content of IDC prints and vendor documents.
- Review work processes of discipline personnel ensuring Massy Wood Group Management Systems and Procedures are followed.
- Approve of discipline deliverables, discipline content of IDC prints and vendor documents for allocated projects.
- Assist the Discipline Lead Engineer and/or Discipline Function Lead as directed.
- Produce solutions that are safe, cost effective, fit for purpose and add value to both Massy Wood Group and the client.
- Understand technical issues and costs related to the selection of typical design solutions within the discipline.
- Ensure operational and maintenance issues are addressed in the design.
- Provide discipline input to procurement and construction activities.
- Ensure discipline is represented at technical meetings for allocated projects.
- Ensure discipline is represented at Design Reviews, HAZOPs, Constructability Assessments, etc. for allocated projects.
- Communicate with Discipline Engineers and Designers to ensure design integrity and consistency.
- Liaise with the Discipline Function Lead to identify and implement improvements in discipline working practices and procedures.
- Capturing and communicating lessons learnt to the Discipline Function Lead.
- Coach/ guide discipline personnel on a majority of discipline applications.
- Keep a log of competencies gained through further education, external training and internal / on the job training.
- Membership of a professional body preferred. Work towards fulfilment of the requirements to obtain either professional or registered engineering status.
- Liaise with client discipline representative with respect to allocated projects.
- Manage increase or reduction in discipline scope of work for allocated projects and advising the Discipline Lead Engineer accordingly.
- Provide input to project execution plans and schedules for allocated projects.
- Reporting discipline progress for allocated projects.
- Communicate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to determine any opportunities where Massy Wood Group could provide solutions to existing problems or for improving the existing practice.
- Identify resource requirements for allocated projects to the Discipline Lead Engineer and ensuring that demands are met.
- Assist Discipline Function Lead with competency assessments of discipline personnel working on allocated projects.
- Assist Discipline Function Lead with performance appraisals of discipline personnel working on allocated projects.
- Perform all other job-related functions as required.
