REGISTERED NURSE

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of REGISTERED NURSE. The Peebles Hospital Registered Nurse (RN): Operating Theatre is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of: assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient in the perioperative setting. The RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all perioperative nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice, standards, and policies. The Operating Room Nurse must have expertise in recognizing complications in the perioperative client. He/She is responsible for learning how to operating all technological equipment utilized in the unit. The function performed requires judgment based upon the application of scientific knowledge and is guided by the policies/ guidelines of the organization and the unit. The R/N collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient delivery of patient care. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity in the provision of patient care. The registered nurse contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement and techniques that demonstrates positive outcomes in patient care. R/N implements best practices and principles of aseptic techniques, practice proper gowning and gloving with surgical attire as per policy. The RN provides care on a 24 hour basis including shift work and emergency care. The registered nurse is an essential worker in periods of national or organizational disaster or emergencies.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Practices in accordance with the scope of nursing practice set out by the BVI Nursing and Midwives Council.
  2. Maintains current RN licensure and relevant certifications (Operating Room, BLS, and ACLS) and is responsible for keeping skill and knowledge level at an acceptable standard.
  3. Provides quality and compassionate nursing care to all patients and families.
  • Utilizes the Nursing Process to admit, plan and care for all patients.
  • Assesses all patients at the start of shift, plans, and implements and evaluates patient care including discharge planning.
  • Assumes responsibility for patients on the patient care units.
  • Monitors and documents patient’s responses to treatments and medications.
  • Utilizes the holistic pattern in caring for perioperative patients.
  • Reports on daily patient activities per shift and during on-call emergencies. Provides regular status reports of the patient’s condition to the Surgeon, Anesthetist and Nurse Manager.
  • The operating room nurse provides care to the perioperative patients requiring sterile surgical intervention and aseptic techniques in a respectful manner. He/ She effectively utilize teaching methods of hand washing and use of PPEs to control and prevent cross contamination and disease transmission to other patients, visitors and staff.
  • Keep abreast of changing techniques in perioperative nursing care and maintains a high level of expertise in perioperative nursing care.
  •  Preparation and Setting of surgical Instrumentation Trolley.
  •  Monitor and Maintain Artificial Airway Management.
  •  Demonstrates competency to admit patients to the Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU).
    4. Adheres to hospital policies for the administration and management of medications.
  • Requisitions, stores, monitors, controls, administers and documents pharmaceuticals
  • Controls and secures Schedule I Dangerous Drugs and maintains legal records for Schedule I Dangerous Drugs.
  • Maintains accurate records and reporting systems for continuing care, legal purposes, and ensures that all members of the Health team are aware of patient-related matters.
  • Ensures stat medication order (immediate post-Op) is documented on mediation kardex.
  • Reconciles patient medication on admission, transfer and discharge.
    5. Controls the patient’s environment to ensure safety, hygienic and aesthetic conditions, and control of noise and traffic flows.
  • Ensure the readiness of the unit to respond to emergencies including the checking of code carts and emergency supplies each shift.
  • Requisitions and maintains equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
  •  Effective monitoring and use of Steam sterilizers.
  • Maintains unit stock and directs the requisition of medical stores as required.
  • Responds appropriately to patient’s and family calls, requests, needs, enquiries; and to the requests of other members of the Nursing Team.
    6.Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards.
  • Assesses the patient’s and family’s education needs and plans, implements and evaluates teaching as needed. Coordinates patient care with other Hospital Units, external agencies, services, and organizations, for continued care and other forms of assistance.
  • Collaborates with other members of the Health Team to achieve the highest quality of care.
  • Collects and analyzes patient data to identify patient and family needs.
  • Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuity of Nursing Care after discharge from Hospital.
  •  Delegates tasks to the Nursing Assistants, Ward Clerks and Orderlies as necessary.
  • Supervises all Junior and Unit based support staff in the delivery of patient care.
  • Assumes responsibility for all Nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff.
    7. Contributes to the hospital risk management and Quality Improvement programme
  • Submits reports on accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences to the Nursing Manager, Director, for risk management purposes.
  • Maintains professional competence by self-directed learning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up-to-date with current research.
  •         Serves as a service ambassador of Peebles hospital in keeping with the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Serves on boards and unit committees as required
    8.Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.
    9.Assumes leadership and managerial roles in the absence of the Nurse Manager as delegated.
    10.Performs other related duties which are consistent with the role profile and may be required in specialty units.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education & Experience

  •  Diploma /Associates Degree/Bachelors’ Degree in Nursing.
  •  Two years’ experience in Nursing.
  •  Two- Three years in Operating Theatre Experience Preferred.
  •  Licenses /Certifications

  • Unencumbered British Virgin Islands Nursing License with a current registration.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities

  •  Sound knowledge of Basic Nursing and Nursing Code of Ethics.
  •  Sound skill in the application of the Nursing Process to perioperative patient care.
  •  Therapeutic Communication skills.
  •  Sound human relation skills and team working skills.
  •  Sound oral and written communication skills.
  •  Knowledge of body mechanics and safe lifting techniques.
  • Physical Demands

  • The individual may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to stoop to perform certain duties, e.g., check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.
