Nursing Assistant

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Nursing Assistant.  The Nursing Assistant provides hygienic, nutritional and comfort measures to patients, performs minor therapeutic procedures such as applying lotions and creams, minor dressing and first aid measures. The NA help patients with activities of daily living and assist the Registered Nurse in measurement of vital signs and fluid monitoring and assists in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.  The Nursing Assistants reports all abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Bathes, grooms, shaves, dresses, and/or drapes patients and prepares them for surgery, treatment, or examination.
  2. Tidies rooms and change linens.
  3. Feeds patients who are unable to feed themselves orally.
  4. Provides patients care by performing dressing, vital signs, glucose testing and assisting with examinations and surgical procedures.
  5.  Assisting Patients with and emptying bed pans, urinals, commodes and drainage devices.
  6. Provides patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
  7. Transports patients to treatment units, using a wheelchair or stretcher.
  8. Turns and re-positions bedridden patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
  9. Collects specimens such as urine, feces, or sputum. Delivers messages, documents and specimens.
  10. Maintains inventory by storing, preparing, sterilizing, and issuing supplies such as dressing packs and treatment trays.
  11. Observes patients' conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital signs, and reports changes to professional staff.
  12. Assists the Registered Nurse with the admission, transfer and discharge of patients, the preparation of the patient unit, and with the orientation of the patient to the Hospital Unit.
  13. Answers patients' call signals. Answers phones and direct visitors.
  14. Support patients in difficult treatment and diagnosis.
  15. Assists in the restraining of patients if necessary.
  16. Documents patient observations legibly and accurately on HIS, registers and data collection records following protocol.
  17. Provides hospitality for patients, families and visitors, referring immediately all problems, concerns and enquiries to the Registered Nurse.
  18. Provide care to Covid patients as needed.
  19. Assists Registered Nurse with specific Nursing procedures as required.
  20.  Document and Reports all incidents, accidents, occurrences and untoward events to the Registered Nurse.
  21. Performs any other related duties, which may be assigned by the Registered Nurse within the role profile and as required by specialized units.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience

v  Training as a Practical Nurse/Enrolled Nurse/ Licensed Practical Nurse.

 

Licenses and/or registrations

v  Registered with BVINMC to practice as Nursing Assistant in the British Virgin Islands

v  BLS and First aid certification preferred

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Basic knowledge of nursing procedures, practices and their application in caring for the patient.

v  Sound interpersonal skills

v  Sound verbal and written communication skills

v  Basic knowledge of practical nursing procedures,

v  Ability to follow instructions

v  Ability to work on a team

Physical Demands 
v  The individual may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties, e.g., check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
