The position is primarily responsible for preparing corpses for viewing and funeral services at the Company's quality standard.

MORTICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that all bodies are tagged on arrival at the mortuary. 
  • Review the death certificate for the cause of death and take the necessary additional precautions when handling the body.
  • Examine the bodies to determine measurements and weight for sizing of coffins and communicate details to the Funeral Coordinators.
  • Examine bodies to determine the preparation needs and execute them in accordance with best practices and standard mortuary and refrigeration operating procedures.
  • Embalm bodies when required in accordance with generally accepted embalming standards.
  • Perform reconstruction on bodies when required in accordance with generally accepted standards.
  • Review the funeral schedule daily to determine deadlines for the preparation of bodies for viewing and/or funeral services.
  • Review the burial/cremation Clothing intake form for standard and special preparation instructions and execute accordingly, ensuring that the clothing tag matches the body identification tag.
  • Ensure all waste is properly disposed of according to standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure that the mortuary and equipment are sanitized according to standard operating procedures.

 

 

ACADEMIC AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Embalming Certification from a recognized institution.
  • A degree in Science
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Mortician/Embalmer.
  • Proficiency in embalming and reconstructive procedures, and techniques for preparing cadavers.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The essential job functions of this position require the incumbent to have a strong constitution and be physically able, as a large portion of the work involves working with the deceased. The incumbent must be able to overcome what is a natural aversion to working with dead bodies and have the fortitude to work with decaying tissue and organs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The incumbent must be physically strong to lift heavy bodies and equipment and stand for long hours.
