Knockalva Technical High School

Knockalva Technical High School

Knockalva Technical High School is nestled in the hills of Ramble, eastern Hanover, Jamaica West Indies. In close proximity are: A Health Centre, Gas Station, Post office, Ramble Police Station, Mount Ward Methodist Church, Mount Ward Primary School, and Haughton Grove Basic Schools both of which are feeders to the school. The school ground is well kept with meticulously manicured lawns, myriad of indigenous flowers and lush vegetation which add to the aesthetic appearance of the institution.

Being the only school that offers Technical Vocational Training in this locale, it is ′a gem amongst other stones′, in this parish and stands out like a Beacon. It is easily accessible as it is located on the major roadway between the city of Montego Bay and the town of Savanna-mar. Understandably, it is like a river basin with many tributaries as both the student and staff population of 1322 respectively, hail not only from its local Hanover but from a wide cross-section of communities in the adjoining parishes.

St James, Westmoreland, and even as far as St. Elizabeth. The school sits on seven acres of arable land owned by the Ministry of Education. It enjoys a salubrious climate, very conducive to learning.

The community is sparsely populated and there is little or no distraction, hence, the school operates in a quiet, calm environment.  Farming is the primary economic activity of this area, so most families own and reside on large acreage of lands on which they plant crops as well as engage in animal husbandry.  The institution first opened its doors on September 1, 1973 as Knockalva Junior Secondary School. It has a population which now comprise of 1130 students, 86 teachers and support staff totaling 106.

The structure then comprised of three buildings Block A, B and C with Block B as it still does, housing the administrative offices. Change is inevitable so like many other institutions, Knockalva has metamorphasized experiencing changes in a) Name

 b) Leadership c) Infrastructure and d) Population as well as programmes, incrementally contributing to the growth and development of the institution.

Our new name is Knockalva Technical High School.

We now have offerings in City & Guilds, CSEC, CAPE NCTVET, NVQJ, and the Career Advancement Programme. We are also exposing our students to Green House Technology Systems which prepares them for Crop Production.
