Our Client, the Family Planning Association of Trinidad & Tobago (FPATT), is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director. This is a permanent position based in Port of Spain.

ABOUT FPATT

FPATT is an NGO whose primary focus is the promoting and ensuring of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all persons in Trinidad and Tobago; through the ongoing development, dissemination, use of research and best practices; advocating, educating, and facilitating, the systems and laws, to allow every person living in T&T, including the most vulnerable, to acknowledge and enjoy the right to the healthy expression of their sexuality, freedom of choice; and the improvement of clinical outcomes for patients with medical issues of the reproductive system, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  

JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director leads a team of professionals, in executing FPATT’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) strategy, to advance services and rights within communities; SRHR knowledge and practice; and strategic partnership with diverse stakeholders, to ensure conformity with the stated mission and policy directives of the Board and achievement of established organisational goals and objectives.  The Executive Director maintains a healthy and mutually supportive relationship with the president and keeps the governing body informed on a timely basis about programme and financial inputs and outputs and all other subjects relevant to the Association’s well-being; and adheres to the doctrine of ‘no surprises.’

The Executive Director is accountable to the Board for the development, continuous review, and implementation of the Association’s strategic framework, to ensure maximization of its resources and that its operations are financially stable, sustainable, and efficiently managed. He/she supports the board in its role by proposing and assisting with the planning of board retreats or special workshops, including periodic governing body self-assessment sessions of its responsibilities, membership, organization, and performance.

  

KEY RESPONSIBIITIES

  • Enables the Association to articulate its mission, corporate values, and operational philosophy, and ensures that these are applied consistently across the Association.
  • Collaborates with the Ministries of Social Development and Family Services, Health, Gender and Child Affairs, other relevant Ministries and public, multilateral, bilateral and private sector agencies to develop effective workplans that deliver on agreed national strategic developmental health goals and targets and other sustainable development goals related to health, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – Good health and well-being.
  • Cultivates and strengthens relationships with United Nations Agencies, individual and Foundation donors so that FPATT is known as the effective ‘go to’ implementing partner for achieving SRHR targets; and represents FPATT at relevant SRHR national, regional, and global fora.
  • Maintains sound working relationships and ensures fulfilment of all reporting and other obligations with governmental, non-governmental, multi-lateral, bilateral and private sector donors for reproductive health services, capacity development, HIV and STI screening, care, treatment, and support for the effective and efficient delivery of all agreed goals and targets.
  • Advises and advocates for support on best practices, legislation, policies, national strategies, and guidelines to address issues impacting HIV-related care, education and training, treatment, and support to clinical and non-clinical providers for capacity development and HIV stigma reduction.
  • Is responsible to the board for the general financial health of the Association. This includes the management of risk and the maintenance of adequate and relevant internal controls.
  • Ensures that the Association has the appropriate resources (human, material and financial) to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible.
  • Develops a staffing structure that supports the efficient delivery of programmes and services, the accomplishment of major goals identified in the strategic plan and effective overall management.
  • Develops with the Board’s approval,  and implements appropriate periodic strategic plans, annual operating plans, associated organisation structures, and annual budgets to provide guidance to FPATT, and the monitoring and control of its operations, to deliver the strategic objectives of FPATT,   its sponsors and donors, through influential advocacy work, and prudent stewardship of all received funds.
  • Maintains a close relationship with the Regional Office of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), foreign and local funding agencies and other policy and decision-making institutions relevant to the Association.
  • Ensures that the Association’s Strategic and Business Plans, Annual Programme and Budget, Half-Yearly and Annual Reports, Annual Financial Audits and the relevant reports to Government, local, regional, and international donors are prepared in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the design of appropriate monitoring and evaluation techniques with suitable control systems in place and implemented, to ensure achievement of all strategic objectives.
  • Ensures that there is a succession plan in place with mechanisms for the continuous evaluation, development, and recruitment of human resources to ensure the organisation has optimum workforce levels to achieve its strategic goals.
  • Leads negotiations between the Association and the National Union for Government and Federated Workers, the Union representing FPATT’s staff.
  • Creates and maintains a zero-tolerance safety and environmental culture to make the prevention of accidents, incidents and the preservation of life, limbs, and the environment paramount for all employees.

  

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

  • Degree in Business Administration, Management Studies, or an equivalent accreditation in a relevant discipline
  • At least 10 years post qualification experience in a similar or related job function, 5 of which should have been at senior management level.
  • Work experience in the NGO sector or in an environment like that of the Association would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership experiences would be an asset.
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and program development.
  • Proven ability to work with efficiency and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – junior and senior, for-profit, and nonprofit, and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Outstanding communication and people skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of Sexual and reproductive Health; Population planning/development issues; Management; Project planning/Research/Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Ability to convey a vision of the Association’s strategic future to staff, volunteers and donors. 
  • Ability to advocate on issues promoted by the Association and to exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Remains focused under pressure, delivers against timelines, and not intimidated by tasks/time limitations.
