Qualifications and Experience

 

Applicants must have:

 

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized medical school.
  • The ability to be a Registered Medical Practitioner with the St. Lucia Medical & Dental Council to practice in St. Lucia. Applicants who meet all eligibility requirements for registration are encouraged to apply.
  • Successful completion of residency program in anesthesia, with a minimum of 3 years of post-certification experience in Anesthesia practice. 
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is recommended.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, including participation in relevant courses, workshops, and conferences.

 

Job Summary

The Consultant Anesthesiologist will be responsible for the administration of anesthesia

to patients undergoing surgical and medical procedures. The Consultant’s role includes

preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative care, ensuring patient

safety and comfort. The Consultant will lead and mentor junior anesthesia staff, participate in

quality improvement initiatives, and engage in strategic planning for the department. This

position requires a dedication to continuous professional development and a focus on patient-

centered care.

Clinical Governance:

  • Understand clinical governance principles, quality improvement methodologies, and patient safety initiatives in Anesthesiology Department, with commitment to continuous improvement and adherence to professional standards.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in educational activities, conferences, and continuing medical education (CME) opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge, skills, and competency in anesthesia practice.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in anesthesia through continuous education and professional development.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and licensure requirements.

 

Procedural Skills:

  • Administer medications to induce general anesthesia, ensuring rapid and smooth onset.
  • Monitor and adjust anesthetic levels to maintain appropriate depth of anesthesia throughout surgical procedures.
  • Manage the safe emergence from anesthesia, ensuring a smooth transition to wakefulness and recovery.
  • Manage deep sedation for procedures requiring a higher level of sedation, monitoring for airway patency and respiratory function.
  • Use LMAs as an alternative to endotracheal intubation for airway management during anesthesia.
  • Utilize advanced airway management techniques, such as fiberoptic intubation or video laryngoscopy, for difficult airways.
  • Lead and perform advanced CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in response to cardiac arrest or other life-threatening emergencies.
  • Recognize and manage anesthesia-related complications such as malignant hyperthermia, anaphylaxis, and local anesthetic systemic toxicity.
  • Provide anesthesia care for trauma patients, often in emergency and uncontrolled environments, ensuring rapid assessment and stabilization.
  • Tailor anesthesia techniques to the unique physiological and psychological needs of pediatric patients, ensuring safety and comfort.

Salary will be paid in accordance with the terms stipulated by Government in the Estimates of Expenditure and commensurate with experience and qualifications for the post.
